Carrie, Physical Education

Need to get caught up? Check out my review of episode one, First Period.

I have to admit, the last episode of Carrie was sort of dragging for me. There’s been too much teen drama, not enough crazy magic.

Well, this episode resolved that.

We start this episode with Margaret trying to get Chris expelled. Which seems fair. Especially as we learn more and more about how the Carrie Red accusations are impacting the rest of the students. Kids are suffering. So are the teachers.

This feels all too real. These sorts of bullying campaigns have caused kids to make irreversible decisions. I know several students in my school did. I bet in yours, too.

That being said, it’s understandable that Margaret goes on the warpath. She’s determined to protect Carrie from this.

Honestly, good for her.

Meanwhile, Chris is spiraling. After Margaret starts fighting back, Chris decides to break into the White’s house and mess with them. While there, she discovers the hidden cameras and steals the SD card. This leads to a baffling and shocking surprise at the end of the episode.

Finally, Carrie is learning about her powers. She’s practicing with Emaline, who keeps pushing her to try more and more. She starts messing with her bullies in the lunchroom. When Chris comes over and intentionally antagonizes her, Carrie breaks her nose with her powers.

Plug it up, Chris.

All this was quite satisfying. But the ending of this episode was shocking. I’ll be honest, I didn’t see it coming at all. But it left me dying to watch the next episode.

This was a wild episode. To start with, I love the character arc Margaret is going through. This isn’t to say that she’s becoming a good person. She’s not. She is, in fact, sinking to the level of an emotionally broken, self-destructive teenager. After we saw her dip her manager’s handmade coffee cup in the toilet, I guess this shouldn’t be surprising.

But she also apologized to Carrie about leaving her husband’s ashes at the crematorium. And she goes to a school board meeting to insist that the principal take this situation seriously. And that was a good idea! She’s right that Principal Grayle isn’t doing enough to deal with this Carrie Red issue. And she has tried to talk to him privately. Clearly, it’s time for stronger action.

I was also excited to see Carrie developing her powers. She’s excited. She feels powerful. And this is probably the first time she’s ever felt powerful in her life.

Too bad about that ending, though. I mean, I can’t stand the thought of ruining it for you. But it was heartbreaking.

I cannot wait to see what happens next. But we’ll have to wait a few days. Tomorrow, we’ve got a date in New Orleans. See you then.

My book, Station 86 Volume One, is available now on Amazon! It’s got two dark sci-fi stories about murder and mayhem on the station of First Contact.
