Killer Queens, this week’s final episode of American Horror Story finally brought us back to New Orleans. Back to Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. Where Cordelia is having a bad day.
During a lesson, one of her students shows exceptional new powers. After a bit of an altercation, the student admits that she just developed these powers. She is one of at least three girls to do so. Cordelia worries that the magic is preparing them for a fight. Then, for some reason, she decides to call on her mother, Fiona.
Before Fiona can make contact, the Academy is visited by members of the Hotel Cortez Devil’s Night. Mr. March leads Jeffrey Dahmer, the Zodiac Killer, and the Night Stalker in a terrifying attack that leaves one witch dead on the ground.
There were a lot of fun moments in this episode. Of course, I was thrilled to see the Coven again (finally).
The best moment, though, was Mr. March talking with Dahmer. Fans of Ryan Murphy might remember a miniseries called Dahmer, in which Jeffrey was played by Evan Peters. Peters is not playing Dahmer in this one; Seth Gabel did. This was unendingly funny to me. I have to wonder if they discussed who played Dahmer better.
It’s Peters.
That being said, this episode actually had more negative than positive. First off, I don’t think we needed thirteen powerful witches to use a Ouija board. Drunk girls do that at slumber parties. We could have either done something more dramatic, or used fewer witches.
Oh, but we do have to continue the use of the number thirteen. At least it’s being treated with respect for a change.
Then, there was the death of a beloved character. I’m not going to spoil it for you. Though honestly, the death didn’t have the weight it probably should have.
Here’s the problem. American Horror Story kills characters the same way Marvel Comics does. No one ever stays dead for long. And even if they’re dead, that really just means they can’t leave their house. Kind of an eternal version of house arrest. So yes, this character died. But I don’t think that really matters.
Even so, this episode did at least bring our heroes to the forefront. I guess we’ll just have to wait until next week to see what they do.
Missed an episode? You can go back and check out my review of the first three seasons right here.
My book, Station 86 Volume One, is available now on Amazon! It’s got two dark sci-fi stories about murder and mayhem on the station of First Contact.
