By the pricking of my thumbs, something weird this way comes

We’re here to tell you a scary story. Or, where to find a good scary story. We review the best in modern horror across platforms, and talk about cult classics you might have missed. We also publish new horror art. Basically, we’re your one stop site for all things scary.

AHS 13, The Prodigal Son

Need to get caught up? Check out my review of the first three episodes of this season.

I love many things about the horror genre. Obviously. But I’m also a huge nerd. So, one of my favorite things about horror is when it sends me down a historical rabbit hole. This episode of American Horror Story did just that.

Let me save you a search, if you don’t already know. Pope Pius XII was actually a bit wishy-washy about Hitler, unfortunately. But this episode was still fun.

Back in New Orleans, Papa Legba is leading the witches in a spell to see what the Devil is planning.

Through this spell, we finally understand why our crew in New York has been trying to age up Mr. Nas. I’ll admit, this one was a surprise. It was a good reveal.

Meanwhile, Ben is putting the whole story together. He’s realized that not only is Mr. Nas the Devil (duh), but he’s also his father. Ben tries to kill him, but fails.

Mr. Nas is ready for a family reunion, though. He explains that while he wants to rule Earth, he doesn’t want to actually handle the day-to-day. So, he’d like to give it to his son.

This was a really fun episode. First of all, Ben is kind of a badass. And since he’s scared of a number, that’s impressive. When he realized that his new client is the Devil, he could have run. He certainly didn’t have to go face off against, you know, the literal Devil. But he does. Good for him.

I also really loved that the spell that Papa Legba did looked like a real spell. I have certainly done spells that involved a veve, candles, and a circle of protection. It didn’t take me into a historical vision that revealed secrets of the Vatican. But, you know, it was a great spell anyway.

Finally, I’ve got to be careful with this last one. If you haven’t seen the end of the episode, I don’t want to ruin it. Because, unlike the rest of the season, it wasn’t obvious and predictable. It included a great moment for one of our characters. Someone got to look real cool. I’ll just leave it at that.

Honestly, I only have one complaint. And if you’ve seen the episode, I bet you already know the issue.

What was the deal with that Sorry scene near the end?

Honestly, the whole end of this episode was really rushed. The pacing was terrible. It just didn’t make any sense and really threw the whole episode off. No specific part of the scene was bad. It was just that it was badly paced and confusing.

All that being said, this was a fun episode. I am very much looking forward to next week’s episode. And if you’ll indulge me, I want to make a prediction. Because honestly, it seems obvious.

I think it’s pretty clear that Ben is going to team up with our Coven. And really look forward to seeing it.

I guess we’ll have to wait until next week to see if I’m right. See you then, Killer Queens.

For now, though, let’s go back to high school.

My book, Station 86 Volume One, is available now on Amazon! It’s got two dark sci-fi stories about murder and mayhem on the station of First Contact.
